Let’s be completely honest for a second:
the hours leading up to a photoshoot can sometimes feel a little chaotic. You’re trying to get everyone dressed, out the door on time, and hoping against hope that the kids (or your partner!) stay in a good mood.
If you are already feeling anxious about your upcoming session, take a deep breath.
As a lifestyle photographer, my goal isn't just to hand you beautiful, true-to-color images at the end—it’s to give you an enjoyable, effortless experience during the shoot itself. Real life isn't perfectly manicured, and your session shouldn't feel like a high-stress test.
To help you trade the anxiety for excitement, here is my step-by-step game plan for a relaxed, fun, and stress-free photoshoot.
Feed everyone a solid meal
2 Hours Before
Hangry is a real thing, especially for little ones (and grown-ups!). Make sure everyone has a good meal or a protein-packed snack before getting dressed. Avoid messy foods like red sauces or juice boxes that could invite a last-minute wardrobe malfunction.
Pad your travel time
1 Hour Before
Aim to arrive at our location 10 to 15 minutes early. Giving yourself a buffer for unexpected Northeast Florida traffic or a last-minute diaper change means you won't arrive at the session feeling rushed and flustered.
The 'no-pressure' arrival
15 Minutes Before
When you arrive, use those extra few minutes to let the kids stretch their legs, adjust a collar, or take a sip of water. Let them get used to the environment so they feel safe and ready to explore.
4 Golden Rules for a Relaxed Session
1. Let Go of "Perfect" Behavior
If your toddler won't sit perfectly still or your child refuses to look directly at the camera and smile on command, please don't sweat it. In fact, I prefer it! The magic happens when kids are exploring, giggling, and being their authentic selves. If a meltdown happens, we pivot. We play a game, explore a trail, or take a quick break for a hug. I promise you, we will get the shot.
2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Lens
You don't need to worry about what to do with your hands or look at the camera the entire time. The best photos are the candid, unscripted moments where you are laughing together, whispering a joke to your partner, or chasing your kids. Treat the session like a fun family date night, and let me handle the rest.
3. Pack a "Secret Weapon" Comfort Bag
Feel free to bring along a bag of non-messy, quick incentives (think fruit snacks, smarties, or a favorite small toy) that can help hit the reset button if a little one gets overwhelmed. Also, packing a favorite blanket to sit on can give toddlers a familiar, cozy boundaries to hang out on during the shoot.
4. Trust Your Photographer
I've seen it all—from runaway dogs to mid-shoot outfit blowouts. Nothing will phase me! I am completely dedicated to freezing these fleeting, real seasons of your life just as they are. When you relax and lean into the fun, everyone else will follow your lead.
A Quick Reminder: Ten years from now, you won't remember a stiff, forced smile. You’ll look at these images and remember the way your child held your hand, the sound of your partner's real laugh, and the beautiful, honest love your family shares.
